How to Maintain Moisture in your Naturally Curly Hair throughout the Week!

Hi everyone!!

As we go through our natural hair journey, one of the major challenges that some of us face is dealing with dry hair.

Now that it is Springtime, it is ESSENTIAL to maintain the moisture in our hair.

Here are some tips that have helped me during this season and I hope this will be helpful for you as well!

1. Study your Hair!

It is important that we pay attention to our hair's behavior during each season!

  • In regards to products, what does your hair like? What it doesn't like?

  • How long does your hair feel moisturized before it feels dry?

  • Are you drinking enough water in the day?

  • Are you eating enough nutritious foods?

These are the things we have to take into consideration, so we will know what to do next for our hair maintenance.

2. Know the Importance of Moisture Maintenance!

It is very important that we maintain the moisture in our hair, throughout the week, because:

  • Your hair consistently needs the nutrients from the moisture that you apply.

  • Your hair needs strength to maintain its health.

  • Your hair maintains the length retention by keeping your ends healthy.

3. Choose your Favorite Hair Products to Maintain Moisture

There are so many hair care products in the market, now, that we can choose for our hair needs.

I definitely recommend that you choose products that have ingredients you know works for your hair.

For example, I tend to choose products that have aloe vera juice, coconut oil (yep, my hair likes it 😂), silk protein, hydrolyzed keratin, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and more.

Really pay attention to the ingredients in products that your hair loves in certain seasons of the year.

4. Steps to Maintain Moisture in your Hair

Hydrate your hair with water or a refresher spray. This will be a base for your hair to receive the added nutrients.

Moisturize your hair with a hair cream or hair pudding. This will seal the hydration in your hair strands while feeding your hair with the nutrients that it needs.

Seal your hair with light oil. This will seal your hair cuticles and lock all of the moisture into place.

Another option is to use just a refresher spray and oil if you don't feel the need to add a creamy moisturizer.

5. How often should you moisturize your hair throughout the week?

This question definitely depends on the hair porosity and the seasonal air elements.

  • Low Porosity: holds onto moisture for a longer period of time.

  • High Porosity: holds onto moisture for a short period of time.

  • Normal Porosity: holds onto moisture for an average amount of time.

  • Colder Seasons: Closes hair cuticles, which is a bit difficult to add moisture.

  • Warmer Seasons: Open hair cuticles, which is a bit difficult to keep moisture.

As for my hair, I usually have to re-moisturize it every 3 days.

Yet, the more you practice moisture maintenance, your hair can last even longer throughout the week.

In this picture below, my hair (left side) was on day 3 after my wash day. I co-washed my hair, used a creamy leave-in conditioner, and sealed it with oil. Apparently, my hair could not hold onto the moisture from those products for a long period of time.

So, I followed the steps in section 4 of this post and I am on my 6th day from the last time I re-moisturized my hair (right side) and it still feels good! That's a big difference in moisture retention!

This is due to the hair strands having enough protein to hold onto the moisture for a longer period of time!

Warning: Do NOT Over-Moisturize your Hair!

There is such a thing as moisture damage. Over-moisturizing can cause your hair to be too elastic with no structure (not much curl definition) to the point that the hair strands can experience breakage.

Allow your hair to absorb the initial products for a couple of days before you re-moisturize.

Also if your hair feels too soft with no structure, then I do recommend a protein treatment (once-a-month) to help restore your hair health!

Moisture-Protein Balance is key!!

I hope you all enjoyed this post. I pray this was informative and helpful for you and your hair journey.
